Granberg, Naturreservat

The varied environment of the reserve allows birds and several rare lichens to thrive.
The entire area was affected by a major forest fire in 1868, after which the forest has been largely unmanaged. The reserve contains plenty of dead wood in the form of old, coarse chimney stumps and standing dead trees, known as dry bark.

The eastern part is dominated by old, ungrafted, uneven-aged spruce forest with elements of really old pines and deciduous trees. The central parts consist largely of wooded moorland hills, swamp forest and marshes.

The reserve was established to preserve the old coniferous forest and to promote the presence of old pines and sun-exposed dead pine wood.

Animals and plants

Granberg is home to a valuable cryptogamic flora, including the red-listed species hull lichen, dwarf goblet lichen, violet-grey thorn lichen and Norwegian beak lichen. Birds include the three-toed woodpecker and the capercaillie, and at Pors- and Rammyren, the sparrowhawk, crane and curlew have nested.
