Gavelsbjer, Naturreservat

Surrounded by intensively cultivated plains, the 25 meter high moraine hill Gavelsbjer rises. From the top you have a sweeping view of the flat landscape of Söderslätt. Refuge in the agricultural landscape

Large-scale agriculture dominates the fertile soils of Söderslätt. Small impediments, such as field mounds and marrow pits, are therefore important refuges for the plants and animals that have no place in rational agriculture. Despite Gavelsbjer's small size, the reserve has a fine dry meadow flora, with species such as the clove and the wood anemone. The plant life in turn attracts a variety of butterflies and, among other things, meadow metalwing, lesser bluewing and broad-browed and six-spotted bastard swarmers have been observed.

From gravel pit to pasture

Gavelsbjers nature reserve was established in 1956 to prevent the hill from being used as a gravel pit. Several other moraine hills in the area have been consumed by gravel pits. The eastern side of Gavelsbjer has been subjected to quarrying, but this was discontinued and the quarry was restored. Today, grazing animals walk on the hill and their trampling has formed clear paths and terracing on the steep slopes. If you follow one of the paths up to the top, you get a wide view of the plain landscape and its villages.

Outdoor recreation

Visiting this small reserve will probably involve climbing this hill. Once up there is a rest area and nice views. Remember to take your trash home with you. Keep an eye out for the honeysuckle, which blooms in spring, and the carnation, which blooms a little later in the summer. A few hundred meters east of Gavelsbjer is Arriesjöns strövområde Link to another website. where there are more opportunities for outdoor activities with marked hiking and riding trails, barbecue areas and obstacle course. Parking spaces are available adjacent to both areas and the nearest bus stop is Arrie school which is a few hundred meters west of the reserve.

Welcome to Gavelsbjer Nature Reserve

The softly rounded hill rises 25 meters above the vast agricultural landscape. From the top of the hill you can look across the fields with Lake Arriesjön to the east and the village Arrie to the south-east. Far away in the distance Malmö's Turning Torso is just about visible.

Gavelsbjär is one of the moraine hills scattered around Arrie. The hills were formed when the inland ice melted. Many of them have disappeared, as they were used for gravel extraction,

and Gavelsbjär has also been eaten into. On the top you find a fine dry grassland flora with pasqueflower and dwarf everlast. The rare gem of the reserve is the large pink; a fragrant pink carnation with fringed petals only found in a few places around Skåne.

Grazing animals in the reserve help keep the landscape open, a prerequis-ite for the rich biodiversity. You are welcome to walk in the pastures, but keep a distance to the animals. Neverapproach animals if you have a dog with you.
