Beskrivelse

St. Anne's Church was built as a chapel and annex to Skällvik in the 14th century. It was dedicated to the seafaring saint St. Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary. People came here by sea and moored their boats in the wall surrounding the church. The chapel became a choir when the church was extended with a new nave equipped with a bell tower. The church was consecrated by Bishop Hans Brask in 1521. In 1819-21 a new church was built some distance away, as the old church had become too small. The building stone and furnishings were taken from the old church and left to decay. In the 1960s, the oldest chapel and a belfry were rebuilt. Fragments of frescoes can be found on the original walls. The church has star vaults, typical of the 14th century. The oldest preserved furnishings are in the new church: a three-part altar cabinet from 1590, which is said to come from Stegeborg Castle, and a painting from 1512 depicting kneeling Sten Sture and Kristina Gyllenstierna.
