Lödersjön, Naturreservat

The Lödersjön Nature Reserve is a mix of forests, marshes, small ponds, and waterways. The reserve stretches between Lödersjöberget and Råberget, which form the municipal boundary between Malung-Sälen, Mora, and Vansbro.

Various Types of Marshes with Many Species

The reserve’s greatest natural value lies in its marshes. Think of marshes with loose bottoms, flark marshes with strands of firm mats, soft-mat bogs, and flark pools. To most of us, this sounds like pure Greek, but the different types of marshes give the area a great diversity of species. In addition to a number of more or less rare birds, there are also unusual lichens and fungi. The bright yellow wolf lichen, for example, is common on dead trees in the marshes (they can be seen in the slideshow).

Old Pine Trees and Rare Lichens

On the bog islands, there is a pine-dominated forest with trees that are 200–300 years old. A few are even over 400 years old. The forest bears many traces of fires on living pines and pine stumps. On one stump, traces of six fires have been counted.

On and between the bog islands, there is a great deal of wolf lichen. It is a Red Listed and protected species that thrives on old, dry pine trunks that have grown slowly over a long period and received plenty of sunlight. Other rare species include, for example, violet-gray beard lichen, pine tinder fungus, and crustose lichen.

Rich in Bird Life with Many Species

Typical wetland species thrive at Vid Lödersjön, including the curlew, the common sandpiper, the golden plover, the yellow bittern, the green sandpiper, the meadow pipit, and the willow grouse. Waterfowl such as the black-throated loon and osprey, as well as forest birds like the black grouse and several species of woodpecker, have also been spotted in the vicinity of Lödersjön. Among the birds of prey that hunt here are the honey buzzard, the hen harrier, and several species of owls.

Outdoor Recreation

Hunting and fishing take place in the area. In the northern part, a snowmobile trail runs through the area. One of the purposes of the reserve is to provide space for silence and a sense of unspoiled nature. Therefore, no other summer trails will be marked through the rest of the reserve.
