The rocks on the site are the remains of an old colliery hut. This is where the charcoal maker lived during the time the charcoal kiln was lit and the charcoal was produced. Charcoal was once used as fuel in the local ironworks.

After the 2014 forest fire, it is easier to see traces of charcoal production, as much was previously hidden by vegetation. Hundreds of charcoal kilns and charcoal kilns have been found throughout the fire area.
