Hammarsten vårdkase

At Vikeboda, you can make a detour to the Hammarsten spring hut. There is no marked path up the mountain and the climb is very steep and demanding at times, but the view is worth the effort.

From the 48 meter high vårdka mountain you have the best view of Valdemarsviken.

Spring barracks have been used as a signaling system since ancient times. The barracks were stacked with resin-rich wood that was ignited by the guards when danger threatened. Fire and smoke could be seen all around, beckoning people to come out in force to meet the enemy. The system is perhaps many thousands of years old, and was still in use into the 19th century.
