Biskops-Arnö

A narrow road bridge leads over to the Mälarön island of Biskops-Arnö. You may have heard of the folk high school and the old bishop's house. But Biskops-Arnö is also a beautiful cultural landscape with forests, fields, meadows and pastures. In spring, the land under the bare deciduous trees is covered with bluebells and wood anemones. Feel free to hike the 1.8 km-long Path of the Senses. Along the path you will have the opportunity to sit down and enjoy the view and nature. Some parts are adapted for the disabled. On hot summer days, you can take a dip in Lake Mälaren at the swimming area.

On a small hill stands the impressive Biskopseken. Its age has been estimated at almost 600 years and it measures 525 cm in circumference. Oak is just one of many deciduous trees on Biskops-Arnö. All of Sweden's noble deciduous trees are found here, except hornbeam: elm, ash, beech, oak, linden, maple and birdberry.

The island has a long history with houses remaining from the Middle Ages. Early on, a bishop's castle was built here where the archbishops could stay during the summer. Later, Gustav Vasa also lived on the island. Visit the Gothic Hall from the early 14th century. In the 19th century, Hans-Henrik von Essen lived here. He thought there was a lack of ancient remains in the area and therefore created a number that you can see in several places.

The right of public access applies on Biskops-Arnö, but in the southern part there is a Natura 2000 area where special regulations apply.
