Beskrivelse

Hjorthagen at Wram's Gunnarstorp Castle is located on Söderåsen, just south of Åstorp. The reserve is an animal garden dating back to the 16th century and it is surrounded by a stone wall just over three km long. The area has acquired its park-like character from the long-term grazing of fallow deer. There are no facilities for outdoor recreation.

Stone wall from the 16th century

The stone wall that surrounds Hjorthagen is just over 3 km long, 2 meters high and 1 meter wide at the base. The wall was built in the 16th century and is a cultural monument. However, parts of the wall have been demolished by previous industrial activity.

One of the country's oldest fallow deer herds

Hjorthagen's fallow deer population is probably one of the oldest in the country. The deer were brought here and released as early as the mid-17th century. The fallow deer in Hjorthagen probably originate from Turkey. Even today, almost 100 fallow deer graze in the fenced area. Today, however, the stone wall has been supplemented with modern electric fences.

Sparse oaks and swamp forest

The long-term and continuous deer grazing has given rise to Hjorthagen's park-like character. The forest is sparsely covered with mainly oak and the shrub layer is virtually non-existent. A stream with a number of smaller tributaries runs through Hjorthagen. Around these watercourses there is a swamp forest.

Insects and cryptogams

Hjorthagen's highest natural values are linked to the older trees. Here you can find interesting insects, mosses and fungi. Among other things, the beech blossom beetle and yellow-ringed creeper have been found in the reserve.

Outdoor life

Parking is available along Wrams Gunnarstorpsvägen. Entrance with ferry is along the gravel road-Skåneleden. Marked paths are missing inside the garden, but it is good to roam freely. At the pond there are some stones for rest and coffee. Remember to take your rubbish home.
