Beskrivelse
The Isgärde coastal deciduous forest nature reserve along Kalmarsund is a reserve divided into several different sub-areas. The largest parts of the areas consist of older deciduous forest with old oaks and hazel bushes.
History of the forest
In older times, the area was a small part of the large contiguous forest area that then existed between Borgholm Castle and south down to Smedby parish, which was called "Strandskogen". This large deciduous forest area is depicted on the map of Öland drawn up in 1646.
Spring flowering
In the spring, before the leaves have fallen, the ground in many places is covered with wood anemones and in several places the flora is rich with wild garlic, toothwort and witch hazel. In the shallow bay of Koviken there is grazed and sandy grassland. Several unusual and rare fungi thrive here and all the flowers provide food for many pollinating insects. The bay has shallow soft bottoms.
A place to visit
The nature reserve is a popular hiking area and several paths run through the area. The many large oaks along Kalmarsund and the eye-catching spring blossoming of whitethroats make the area a much appreciated natural gem. The reserve is also close to the community of Stora Rör and connects to the popular bathing area at Ispeudde. Stone fences that once separated meadows and fields from the grazed areas are part of the area's fine cultural history.
