Beskrivelse
Verum consists of a mosaic of broadleaf forest, pastures, moors and coniferous swamp forest along the meandering Vieån river. The broadleaf forest and the small open fields invite you to go for walks and in the river you have the chance to see otters and lapwings.
Moors and broadleaf forests
The Vieån river is surrounded in the reserve by mader, open riverside meadows, which have historically been used for haymaking. The old pastures next to it have largely grown back with oak, hazel, hornbeam and beech. Light penetration is minimal, which gives rise to an almost non-existent field layer in parts of the reserve, but here and there there are glades with elements of gray loosestrife, strawberry and yarrow.
Old-fashioned arable land
Adjacent to the pastures and moors there is a small area of arable land with an old-fashioned character. The arable land gives rise to both biologically valuable buffer zones and attractive cultural environments.
Forest with great development potential
In Verum there are a number of goat ridges that are largely covered with broadleaf forest. Most of the trees have not yet reached an age of 100 years, but here and there you can find beech lichen and beech wart lichen, both of which are dependent on older broadleaf forest environments. As the forest ages and the proportion of dead wood increases, the reserve can develop an increasingly interesting flora and fauna.
Otters and birds
The area is home to a number of interesting bird species. In the meadows there are snipe and yellow eagle, and in the forest areas there are greenfinch and nutcracker. In the storm-hardened coniferous swamp forest, swifts nest, among other things. In the River Vieån, there are otters as well as lapwings. In cold winters, otter tracks can be seen in the form of paw prints and the grooves that form when the animals canoe over snow and ice.
In English
Welcome to Verum Nature Reserve
The nature reserve consists of a mosaic of broad-leaved deciduous forest, coniferous swamp forest, pastures and inundated fens along the meandering river Vieån.
In the reserve, the river Vieån is surrounded by inundated fens, open wet meadows, historically used for hay-making. Oak, hazel, hornbeam and beech are among the species that grow in the adjacent old pastures. The fields connecting to the pastures and wet meadows create both biologically valuable edge habitats and an attractive cultural environment.
In Verum there are several sharp-crested eskers, largely covered in broad-leaved deciduous forest. Most of the trees are not yet a hundred years old, but here and there you find the lichens Lecanora glabrata and Pyrenula nitida, which both depend on old broad-leaved forest habitats.
On the wet meadows you may see snipe and yellow wagtail, and the forested areas are home to for example green woodpecker, jay and wren. In the river Vieån you find both goldeneye and otter. In cold winters, look for otter tracks by way of paw prints and grooves formed when they slide across snow and ice.
