Kärrholmen, Naturreservat

Kärrholmen has good natural harbors and an attractive outdoor environment.

Kärrholmen is a flat, wooded island located in the middle of Sätterholmsfjärden between Jäverön and Arnön. The island consists roughly of a central section with three headlands in different directions. The two northern headlands offer good natural harbors and the western side has attractive sunny cliffs. The southern headland is mainly covered by a sparse rocky pine forest, while the two northern ones show a more varied vegetation.

Vegetated embankments occur throughout the island. A short but well-marked moraine ridge with a north-south alignment occurs on the north-western island.

The reserve was established to preserve an area with highly varied natural conditions and sections of special importance for plant and animal life and an attractive outdoor environment.

Animals and plants

The nutrient-rich bedrock gives rise to a rich vascular plant flora with demanding species such as black bracken, stinkwort and stinkweed. Due to the varied topography and geology, the cryptogamic flora also includes several rare lichens, mosses and fungi.

Before your visit

Kärrholmen has several facilities for visitors. There is a hiking trail, a toilet, a rest house and rest areas with fireplaces. We continuously replenish firewood at the fireplaces. But bring your own firewood if you want to be sure you can make a fire.

Less firewood at fireplaces

From 2023, the resources for the management of the nature reserves have been reduced, which means that we have reduced the supply of firewood. Since we are now putting out less firewood, it is extra important that you as a visitor burn carefully and bring your own firewood if you want to be sure to be able to grill. Please note that fires may only be lit in the designated fireplaces and that it is forbidden to take dead or live branches from the forest.
