Sjögaråsen, Naturreservat

Sjögaråsen Nature Reserve consists of old pine-dominated natural forests with elements of undiked wetlands.
Sjögaråsen borders the Fänstjärnsskogen nature reserve to the southwest and the reserves form a continuous area of old forest stands.

The forest in Sjögaråsen has a history of fire, and there are old trees with fire noises as well as plenty of stumps and flames with charred wood. The forest has a high proportion of aspen and willow.

In the east, the area slopes steeply down towards Sörsjön. On the slope down towards the lake there is an area of approximately 140-year-old and unplanted so-called "stavatall forest" that is probably self-rejuvenated and without the influence of forestry after the last fire in the area.

A forest road runs through the middle of the area. Adjacent to it is an existing small parking lot with space for about two vehicles. A marked snowmobile trail runs north-south across the marshland in the western part of the area.

Animals and plants

The old natural forest stands with no or limited impact of recent forestry measures mean that there are structures such as overstory, dead wood and age variation in the forests. These structures form the basis for the area's presence of red-listed species and signal species such as the long-tailed beetle, barn owl, three-toed woodpecker, lung lichen, crustose yellow lichen, pine thorn, dwarf beech lichen, broktagel and wood moss.
