Beskrivelse
The nature reserve, which belongs to Torsby municipality, has a peace and quiet that is hard to find both in Värmland and in large parts of southern and central Sweden.
The almost 500-hectare area has one of the county's largest contiguous areas of old and natural forest. The area around Krokolaknölen is very hilly and characterized by marked mountain ridges. In the valleys and hollows between the forested ridges there are long, open bogs. Stumps from earlier forestry work are also found here and there, but as far as can be seen, recent felling has been limited.
The natural values known from the area are mainly linked to the old spruce forests. The often sparse and fairly low-growing forests with plenty of top-grown trees are dominated by 110-160-year-old spruce forests with gnarled trees, plenty of dead wood and a noticeable element of old birches.
The reserve was established to keep the area's mosaic of bogs and older coniferous forests intact and to preserve the valuable habitat of grand-dominated natural forest and its typical species and structures. The aim is also to maintain the area's silence and wilderness character.
Animals and plants
Characteristic species for the area include the lichen species violet-grey thorn lichen, Norwegian beak lichen and broktagel. The lichen is unusually abundant on old, gnarled birch and spruce trees in the area.
Three-toed woodpeckers, capercaillie, lichen jay and red grouse also thrive here.
Facilities
Parking is at the turnaround at the end of the road. Please note that the road is closed during thaw.

Värmlands län, Torsby municipality, about 15 kilometers northwest of Sysslebäck and just north of Letafors. Directions: At Klarabro, just south of Brattmon, turn off road 62 towards Brograngen. One kilometer west of Letafors take a forest road north. Since the road to the nature reserve is not signposted, there are good landmarks to look for here; where the gravel road turns off from the public road, a large pine stands in lonely majesty in the middle of the young forest, and just a few hundred meters into the small gravel road, it passes largely over a farmyard. After a kilometer or so the road forks. Keep right, continue for about 3 kilometers and turn left. In a sharp right turn, after about 800 meters, the road forks again. Keep right here and continue to the end of the road, just under 3 kilometers away. Please note that the road is closed during thawing.
Regler
It is prohibited to:
- collect invertebrates such as insects, snails or butterflies
- collect mosses, lichens or wood fungi
- damage or remove trees and shrubs, including dead wood such as flames, dry trees and dry branches, and damage or remove dead trees or parts of trees
- use the area in an organized way for commercial purposes without the permission of the county administrative board, and for schools and institutions to regularly use the area to carry out scientific or other studies,
- drive motor vehicles.
