Handlinger
Beskrivelse
It is an experience to go to a natural forest like Höljberget. The crest of the mountain is 540 meters above sea level and slopes steeply to the east down to the watercourse Höljan.
The area, which was saved at the last minute from felling in the winter of 1994-95, has many old trees that are around 100-150 years or older. The reserve was established to preserve a natural forest area with characteristic vegetation and a rich flora of mosses, lichens and fungi. The area is part of the EU's ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000.
Animals and plants
In the reserve, you will find spruce trees with hanging lichen and herb-rich soils with wreaths, torta and orchids such as maidenhair fern, spiderwort and knotweed.
On the steep eastern slope there are large numbers of dead trees, which is a major contributor to the species-rich flora of fungi, lichens and mosses. There is also a large proportion of dead standing trees which harbor a variety of exciting insects. These, in turn, are appreciated by woodpeckers, among others. The three-toed woodpecker has a sanctuary at Höljberget, and traces of its foraging can be seen on many spruces in the area.
