Vyssle- och Västermyr, Naturreservat

Vyssle and Västermyr are Skåne's largest bog complex. The total area is just over 750 hectares, of which just over 430 hectares are included in the reserve. The central parts of the mire consist of an almost treeless and open bog reminiscent of the northern expanses. Amongst other things, cloudberries, cranberries and cranberry bushes grow here. A footbridge leads out to a viewing platform on the bog. The footbridge is reached by a walk on the old railway embankment that runs right through the area (not accessible).

Low human impact

Vyssle- and Västermyr are relatively spared from human impact. A movable narrow-gauge railway once crossed the marsh and during the two world wars a less extensive peat extraction was carried out in the southern part of Vysslemyr. An embankment from the railroad still remains in the reserve, but otherwise Vyssle- and Västermyr are much less affected than other bogs in the vicinity.

Mistletoe and cloudberry are some of the bog's plants

The reserve contains both laggkärr, marshland, rice bogs, puddles and about fifty mainland islets, many of which have a natural forest character. How wet the ground is is reflected in the vegetation. The marshland is home to, among other things, china grass, marsh lily and water primrose. The bracken is dominated by heather and bell heather, but there are also crowberries, cranberries, cloudberries and round-leaved willow. The marshes are home to marsh willow, coral root, cold grass and missne, among others.

Bird life is rich

Vyssle and Västermyr have a rich and interesting bird life. Here you can see several species that we usually associate with more northerly latitudes, such as greenlegs, ringed plovers, capercaillie, black grouse and wolverine. Wood tits such as the tufted titmouse and black tit thrive in the coniferous forest, and both the tawny owl and the pearl owl are found in the reserve.

Outdoor life

Large parts of the reserve are difficult to access and require boots, but there is an old railway embankment that runs through Vysslemyr. From this embankment, a footbridge leads out to a viewing platform on the open mire. You reach the embankment via Myravägen in Södra Hulta. The road is a small gravel road that forms the border between the two bogs Vyssle myr and Västermyr.
