Beskrivelse
Brantaberg-Oreberget is located at Vinslöv, not far from the Ignaberga limestone caves. In the caves, the bats that otherwise live in the forests of Brantaberg-Oreberget hibernate. Beech forests and small pastures with hedges and bushes meet you here in the bats' hunting grounds on the northern slope of Nävlingeåsen. An unmarked path takes you through the area.
Natural forest with bats
Brantaberg-Oreberget is largely forested and has been so throughout the 20th century. There is a small deciduous swamp forest, but otherwise it is mostly deciduous forest with a lot of beech. A small part of this deciduous forest is similar to natural forest. Here, the tree variation is great between young-old, dead-living and several different tree species. This forest is particularly rich in species, with many mosses, lichens and wood-boring beetles. It is also this forest, with its surrounding glades and hedgerows, that is home to bats.
Forest streams and flowering shrubs
The ground in the deciduous forest is covered in spring and summer by a lush greenery of wood anemone and yellow anemone, with hints of the pink-purple flowers St. John's wort and lungwort. In the moist environment along the streams in the nature reserve, goldenrod, brook burdock and desm bud grow instead.
In the pasture in the west there are several large, wide-crowned old beech trees, known as outfield beech trees. The name and special appearance come from the fact that the trees have grown up in an open pasture landscape and that they were severely chastised by grazing animals during their youth in the 19th century. The wood pigeon, which nests in hollow trees, is found in the area.
Sacrificial spring and fossil field
In the fields you can see traces of older times of cultivation, so-called fossil arable land. The oldest may still be from the Bronze Age, perhaps 5000 years. A little downstream of the bridge over the stream there is also a cold-walled old sacrificial spring, Orekillan.
Outdoor life
With its urban location on the outskirts of Vinslöv, the reserve is easy to visit. Use the path that runs through the area. There is a rest area at the old sacrificial spring (Orekillan) in the eastern part of the reserve. Remember to take your rubbish home.
In English
Welcome to Brantaberg-Oreberget Nature Reserve
The footpaths take you on a varied walk through the Reserve. You will be greeted by impressive hills clad with beech woodland and streams that meander through valleys with alder and birch. Where the woods are replaced by pastures, there are flowering shrubs and bushes. Old stone walls and large open grown trees, bear witness to the fact that this woodland was once farmed, where cows grazed, and hay was harvested.
Perfect havens for bats
In the summer, the woodlands and pastures are perfect havens for bats. There are suitable spots for maternity and day roosts in the old hollow trees and in the hidden gaps in the stone walls. At night, there is the eternal hunt for food, consisting of insects of all kinds. Perfect hunting grounds are the woodland edges, glades, and streams, where insects are plentiful.
Old trees with hollows
In parts of the woodlands and pastures, there are beech trees that are more than 150 years old. Old, large trees with hollows and decaying wood are the best habitat and food source for many rare species. Wood-decay fungi and lots of different beetles, bees and wasps thrive here. Birds and bats live in the hollows in the trees. Flowering bushes and herbs on the woodland edge and glades are visited by bees, butterflies and beetles in search of pollen and nectar. The rich insect life in turn attracts both birds and bats.
