Handlinger

Beskrivelse

Here you can experience untouched forests and fantastic views of the beautiful Uknadalen landscape. The walk to the top is hard on the legs, but well worth the effort. Notice all the old conifers and gnarled oaks along the way. They are home to a wide range of rare animals and plants, from tiny mosses to large birds.

Old and wild forests

Managing the forest has always been difficult in the mighty slopes north of Åkervristen. The forest has been left to its own devices and the trees have been allowed to live and die at their own pace. There are gnarled and twisted oaks, coarse aspens and other deciduous trees along with old pines and spruces. Even up on the top of the mountain and at Lake Trehörn, there is a coarse pine forest that is virtually unaffected by forestry.

Species-rich

Old, coarse and dead trees are invaluable for a number of organisms that do not like rapid changes in their habitat. These include beetles that lay eggs in old pine trees. Or fastidious lichens that only grow on rough, cracked bark. Mosses also live here, with spores that carefully germinate on damp, rotting wood. The wealth of species can be difficult to experience for the uninitiated, but the magnificence of the old forest is an experience in itself.

Hiking in nature

2.6 km of the Tjust Trail passes through the nature reserve. From the south, the trail winds steeply up the mountain. The trail then follows a nice old road. In the eastern parts of the nature reserve there are no trails. Here you go out on your own among logs and stones. The slopes are not quite as dramatic as in the western parts, but it is still something of an effort to get there.

Visitor information

The hiking trail "Tjustleden" passes through the nature reserve (about 3 km) and you can join the trail from the parking lot.

The Nature Conservation Association in Tjust is currently responsible for the management of the hiking trail. Parts of the nature reserve are inaccessible due to the slopes.

From the mountains you have a magnificent view of Uknadalen and those who hike on the trail have good opportunities to see several of the beautiful environments within the reserve at closer range.
