Handlinger

Beskrivelse

Grimsholmen consists of an open coastal heath landscape with botanically interesting coastal meadows, boulder-rich soils and small sandy beaches that are ideal for swimming. The reserve contains several Bronze Age remains such as cairns and stone circles. Birds thrive at Grimsholmen, so there is plenty to see for birdwatchers.

The open landscape at Grimsholmen consists of both open boulder-rich land in the north, grassy heath in the south and elements of heather and damp heath where bell gentian grows. On the sandy ground to the south, mainly sand sedge and various grasses grow. Here and there, you will also find yellow chickweed and pink thrift.

Rocks and birds

Along the sea, sandy beaches open up between meadows and cliffs. Here you will find the usual beach meadow flora, but also more rare species such as beach wormwood, wild clover and beach grass. In the eastern parts of the reserve there are pine forests and mixed forests with birch, alder, beech, oak and rowan.

In the spring you can see migrating ducks, eiders and even egrets. There are also good opportunities to see sanderling, black redstart and ringed thrush. In summer, sandpipers, meadow pipits and oystercatchers walk among the grazing animals, and both sparrowhawks and kestrels often make an appearance.

Stubborn breeding species remain

Unfortunately, humans and mink have scared away a lot of nesting bird species from the area, but some thirty species remain. On nearby Boberg's headland, for example, warblers and pea warblers nest.

In July and August, the rare alcone blue butterfly can be seen flying over the wet heath. The alcone blue has an ingenious partnership with the bell gentian and a red ant of the genus Myrmica. Golden-wings are other butterflies that flutter over the water meadows on sunny summer days, scattering different species of grasshoppers between grasses and herbs.

Traces of the past

The nature reserve contains several Bronze Age remains such as cairns and stone circles. During the Bronze Age, it was common to bury high-ranking people in high places, and in one of the cairns in the highest area in the north there is a rock coffin - a stone chamber grave - with five roof slabs.

At the far end of the headland at Grimsholmen, there is a marina, and in the sea outside, fishermen catch salmon professionally. Nets are set up on piles in the sea with a so-called catch yard. Boathouses in the area bear witness to an old fishing and boatbuilding tradition. Seaweed extraction was previously common in the area.

Enjoy nature

If you fancy a swim, there are both rocks and sandy beaches at Grimsholmen. In summer, it is also possible to visit both a café and an art gallery. Inside Grimsholmen, Smörkullen rises with sweeping views of the coastal landscape. With good visibility you can see as far as Kullaberg.

Strong currents in the sea and a tricky outlet

The sea can be hit by strong currents and sudden seabed changes on windy days. If you get caught in the current, try to stay on course along the coastline to get out of it.

As the outlet of the Suseån river, which flows through the reserve, moves throughout the year depending on the weather and wind, the surfaces around the outlet are sometimes muddy, with soft sand that can be experienced as quicksand, where you can easily sink down. So be extra careful where you put your feet when you are out and about at the outlets.
