🔥 Planned conservation burning in Kroppefjäll spring/summer 2026

In Kynnefjäll you can take a long walk in a wilderness area where capercaillie dance and fence, and the anthills are impressively large.

Enjoy great outdoors between lakes and bogs in coniferous forest. Kroppefjäll Nature Reserve is located in the heart of the Kroppefjäll plateau.

The area is fairly flat, with a rift valley across at Lake Stora Amboln. There the terrain is more hilly. There are several trails to choose from, including Kroppefjällsleden which connects the reserve with two other nearby nature reserves: Ragnerudsjöns branter and Buxåsen. The paths are marked and there are footbridges, but it's good to be on your feet anyway.

It's hard to imagine that large parts of Kroppefjäll were not forested until the beginning of the 20th century. During the 17th century and later, the area had been so heavily exploited for iron and agriculture that it was an open moorland. There are parts that were spared. For example, parts of the forest in the boulder-rich land by Lake Stora Amboln and west of Svingsjön. Along the shore of Svingsjön there are also pine trees over 200 years old. Pines dominate, as the soils in the reserve are poor. Where the soil has more nutrients and moisture, spruce is usually found.

A walk in Kroppefjäll calms the mind with the silence of the forest, where only sounds come from the wind and the animals that live there. If you're lucky, you might see the capercaillie dancing, or the beaver in full flight. Why not choose to extend your stay? Camping is allowed in the reserve (maximum one night in the same place). Remember that fires may only be lit in fireplaces provided by the manager.
