Klev Nature and Culture Reserve - history, nature and meeting places

Klev Nature and Culture Reserve is located in Mårdaklev, along Ätran. Here, nature and culture meet in a landscape that has long been an important place for travel, trade and meetings.

The area offers both history and experiences - from old buildings and cultural environments to hiking trails and viewpoints.

Guesthouse along a historic route

Klev is perhaps best known for Klev's inn, which dates back to the 1600s. An important route between the coast and the interior ran along the Ätrans valley, and here there were inns at just the right distance for travelers to rest, change horses and spend the night.

Klev was strategically positioned along the so-called Ätrastigen, with a gateway to Gunnarp in Halland. The buildings that remain today reflect this history and were declared a listed building in 1988. The following year, the nature and culture reserve was established.

The inn itself in its older form ceased to exist in the 1950s, but several buildings remain. The mansion from 1836 is used today as a residence, while the other houses previously housed both travel rooms and taverns.

Farm shop, events and living traditions

Adjacent to the inn is the old farm shop, which is now run by the Mårdaklev local history society. During the summer it is open to visitors, and here you can buy sweets and other goodies in an environment that takes you back in time.

Various events are also organized throughout the year, such as a Christmas market and other activities suitable for both young and old.

Nature, hiking and views

Around the buildings, a beautiful park and garden area spreads out, with old oaks and beeches. From here, the landscape turns into a wooded hillside, where you will also find the remains of an old fortification and a carving in the rock.

If you follow the paths further, you reach Klevaberg, where a viewpoint offers views of the valley. Along the way there are plenty of places to stop - perfect for a break with your picnic basket.
