Description

Tjäderberget is a large forest landscape on the boundary between Lycksele and Vindeln municipalities. At Inre Kroksjön and towards the dramatic Vitberget mountain, you can hike or ski for days.

The diversity of the forest

Tjäderberget is named after the capercaillie that can be found here. However, you can also see the grey-headed woodpecker, the hazel grouse, the lesser spotted woodpecker and the black woodpecker. If you are lucky, you may catch the scent of the Haploporus odorus. The eagle-eyed among you may spot the Ahlner’s microcalicium lichen on an old, dry stump or jelly lichens on thick aspens. Look really closely at the tree’s wood and bark. On thick, sunlit pines, the rare Nothorhina muricata beetle may have left holes after gnawing through the surface as well as reddish droppings.

Fires in Tjäderberget

Tjäderberget is home to forests with extremely high natural values. The forest has been affected by fire in almost all parts of the reserve. At most, researchers have counted six instances of healing over following fires in a single living pine. Healing over fire scarring is damage to the pine caused by fire. New wood gradually grows over the damage in the tree. In 2007, the County Administrative Board conducted conservation burning in the area. Before that, the most recent fire was dated at 1888.

Fire is a natural feature in northern coniferous forests and a precondition for the pines not gradually being forced out by spruces. Some of the coniferous forests plant and animal species are entirely dependent on the forest burning now and than. That is why conservation burning is conducted in small parts of Tjäderberget.
