Ljuder – Sveriges mest kända socken

Ljuder parish in Kronoberg County is often described as one of Sweden's most famous parishes, thanks to Wilhelm Moberg's books about the emigrants. Christian services have been celebrated in the church in Ljuder since the Middle Ages. The current church was consecrated on the third Advent in 1845, allowing for the first worship service in Ljuder’s new stone church. From the back of the church, there is a lovely view of Ljudersjön, and there are water taps in the cemetery where you can fill your bottle with drinking water.

In the yellow parish cottage across the road, Ljuder’s first permanent primary school, you can view 300 different objects. In the America Room in the same building, there are mementos and records of all those who left their homeland for a better life across the Atlantic. A total of 1,100 residents of Ljuder left Småland, which was a significant portion of the parish's population. On the grassy area, there is an emigration monument made of wood by Karl-Gustav Holmevi from Emmaboda. The journey led to the dreamed land of opportunity in the New World. The motivations varied, and so did their fates.

The schoolhouse's Church School was built in 1850 and was the village's first permanent primary school, operating until 1908 when the schoolroom was deemed health hazardous by a visiting school inspector. At its peak in the late 1800s, children aged 7 to 14 from the parish were taught by a qualified teacher, who could have between 80 and 120 children in the school at the same time. It’s easy to imagine that it must have been cramped between the benches and that the teaching hardly resembled the educational models common today. After the school was closed, the parish cottage was remodeled and served as a gathering place and bank location in the village. Even today, you can rent the space for funerals and other gatherings.
